The Power of Gratitude

Apr 1, 2024 | Leadership

There’s an old British author who had made a lot of money using his words. One day, a reporter approached him and said, “Mr. Kipling, you have made a fortune with your words. Someone once calculated that you make about $100 per word.” Mr. Kipling looked at the reporter, seemingly surprised, and replied, “I did not know that.”

The reporter, eager to witness the worth of Mr. Kipling’s words, pulled out a $100 bill from his pocket and handed it to him. He then requested, “Give me one of those $100 words.” Without hesitation, Mr. Kipling accepted the money, folded it up, and put it into his pocket. As he walked away, he simply said, “Thanks.”

While being thankful might not hold a monetary value of $100 every time we express it, there is inherent importance in cultivating an attitude of gratitude. As the year comes to a close, I am reminded of the significance of expressing gratitude to those who have impacted our lives. Hence, I find myself preparing a stack of thank you notes to mail out.

The Bible and Gratitude

The concept of gratitude is not only prevalent in our everyday lives but is also deeply rooted in various cultures and religions. The Bible, for instance, encourages us to have an attitude of gratitude. It highlights the significance of acknowledging and appreciating the blessings and people we encounter.

As we think about who we are thankful for, it’s essential to let them know. We can send a heartfelt text, write a sincere thank you note, or go the extra mile by mailing them out. Taking the time to express gratitude can have a profound impact on both the giver and the recipient.

Expressing Gratitude

Gratitude can be expressed in a variety of ways, both big and small. It doesn’t require grand gestures or extravagant gifts. A simple act of appreciation can make someone’s day and deepen our own sense of fulfillment. Here are a few ideas to help you express gratitude:

  1. Write a thank you note: A handwritten note carries a personal touch that is often cherished and remembered.
  2. Send a text: A meaningful and specific message can be sent with just a few taps on your phone.
  3. Give a small gift: It could be something symbolic or meaningful to show your appreciation.
  4. Offer a helping hand: Actions speak louder than words. Providing assistance or support can be a powerful way to express gratitude.
  5. Say it in person: Sometimes, a simple face-to-face conversation is all it takes to convey our gratitude.

Remember, it’s never too late to express gratitude. Whether it’s a recent favor or something from the past, taking the time to acknowledge someone’s impact on your life can make a positive difference.

A Year of Gratitude

As we approach the end of the year, let’s reflect on all the moments and individuals we are thankful for. It has been a year of challenges, growth, and unexpected changes. Yet, amidst all the ups and downs, there have been people who have supported us, encouraged us, and made a difference in our lives.

Let’s make a commitment to be more intentional about expressing gratitude in the coming year. Cultivating an attitude of gratitude can transform our lives and the lives of those around us. It brings joy, strengthens relationships, and fosters a positive mindset.

So, as we wrap up this year, I encourage you to take a moment to think about who you are thankful for. Reach out to them, let them know, and express your gratitude in whatever way feels most genuine and meaningful to you.
